Report from the Lochee United

Downfield 0 Lochee United 3

Two goals in the last five minutes put a gloss on the scoreline for title-chasing Lochee United at Downfield Park. The Spiders made the visitors work for the three points and only a penalty goal separated the sides until the dying minutes.

A strong wind and a fiery pitch made good football very difficult and players were often caught out by the bounce of the ball.

Connor Birse had the first opportunity for Lochee when he screwed a shot just wide of the target but the first really good chance fell to Downfield’s Brian Duell when Joe Colquhoun’s surging run upfield left him through on goal. Unfortunately for the Spiders’ striker, he lobbed the ball over keeper Jordan Millar, but wide of the goal.

The home team had another golden opportunity on the half hour mark when a move involving Duell and Lee Cameron led to Ross Gallacher firing across the face of the Lochee goal.

At the other end Grant Lawson saw a back post header held by keeper Ronnie Adams.

On 40 minutes Lochee grabbed the all-important first goal. Reece Ritchie was taken out by Jordan Garden and Dougie CAMERON made no mistake from the spot.

Kieran McWalter fired over from 20 yards in the opening minutes of the second half but there was little goalmouth action to speak of. Lochee, with the wind at their backs, dominated possession but neither keeper was unduly troubled.

Scott McComiskie had the best chance when his shot from the angle of the box whistled past Adams’s right hand post.

Birse then had a chance to increase the visitors’ lead but Adams pulled off a great save to deny the Lochee man.

Sub Connor McLeod had a half chance for the equaliser when his lob went just wide.

But in the final five minutes the Bluebells wrapped things up. Bryan Deasley won a corner and Cameron’s cross was headed home by captain Greg KIRK.

With two minutes remaining, KIRK flashed a perfect set piece cross which everyone missed and the ball landed in the net..
